Symptom

The server is missing from claude mcp list, which warns: Skipped — MCP server "remote" has a "url" but no "type"; add "type": "http" (or "sse" / "ws") to this entry.

Environment and tested versions

Debian GNU/Linux 13 (trixie) x86_64, node 20.19.2, npm 11.21.1; project .mcp.json; Claude Code not logged in (claude mcp list/get work without login)

  • @anthropic-ai/claude-code 2.1.316
  • node 20.19.2

Client used in the test: Tested in Claude Code 2.1.316 itself. "Pending approval" afterwards is the separate project-approval step, not this bug.

Root cause

Claude Code requires an explicit transport type for URL-based servers.

Fix steps

  1. Add "type": "http" (or "sse", or "ws") to the server entry in .mcp.json.
  2. Run claude mcp list to confirm the server appears.

Verification

Tested 31 Oct 2026 in a throwaway directory on a Linux box (fake credentials only). Before (A) and after the fix:

A {"url":...} -> "No MCP servers configured" + Skipped warning
B {"type":"http","url":...} -> remote: http://127.0.0.1:9/mcp (HTTP) - ⏸ Pending approval
